How to Search Engine Optimize Your Blog Posts

Search engine optimization, or SEO, is the process of optimizing online content to increase website traffic and visibility. Once your website – or blog – is optimized using this practice, consumers that search for keywords associated with your product or service can be routed to your website via search engines like Google. When it comes to blog posts, they actually help to boost SEO quality especially when on-page SEO tactics are used. Since blog content contributes to SEO, it is important to understand which practices will enhance your content’s visibility.

  • Long-Tail Keywords

Incorporating as many words into your blog post as possible is what is referred to as keyword stuffing, which is what you should not do when optimizing for keywords. Since this practice actually negatively affects your SEO, try to use one or two long-tail keywords in your posts instead. Using a couple of long-tail keywords in your posts keeps your post focused on its goal for the audience.

  • Include Keywords in Post

Once you’ve determined which long-tail keywords you want to use, start incorporating them into your blog post. The most effective places to use these keywords are in the title tag, header, body, URL, and meta description. Including a keyword in the title of your blog post is crucial because it is the search engine’s and reader’s way to determine the content’s relevancy.

  • Optimize Meta Description

A meta description is an additional text that appears in SERPs that gives insight into what the link is about. This information provides searchers with what they need to determine whether your content is what they are looking for. Incorporating a long-tail keyword into a meta description helps the reader make a connection between their search and the search result thus, proving your post’s relevancy.

  • Avoid Similar Topic Tags

While topic tags can help to organize your blog content, if overused, they can have a negative effect. Try to avoid having too many similar tags or else you are risking a penalty by search engines for duplicate content. If this worries you, choose 15-25 topic tags that you believe are pertinent to your blog – that are not too similar – and only tag your posts with these keywords.

  • Repurpose or Update Content

Instead of taking the time to consistently create new blog content, focus more of your efforts on your existing content. Since it takes much longer for new types of content to gain authority on the search engine results page, using your time to repurpose and update your current content will benefit you more in the long run. Updated content ranks on the SERP at a faster rate, which will positively impact your website traffic and encourage new leads. Over time, some of your content is bound to become outdated and irrelevant to your audience so be sure to take the time to remove any content that no longer serves a purpose.
